This stone is dedicated to the story of the Harbour porpoise:
Spread the word and move the stone!
Porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) are also called ‘sea pigs’ because of their oily appearance and because they can make a grumbling sound.
The sound that porpoises create during exhalation is described by some as a ‘flop’, by others as a ‘sneeze’.
The porpoise must come up to the water to breathe. When the porpoise hunts, it dives under water for about 4 minutes, where it can reach a depth of 200m. In between, they ‘slowly’ roll through the water surface.
In calm, sunny weather, porpoises sometimes float on the surface for a long time, basking in the sun.
The Harbour porpoise is severly endangered in The Netherlands and Belgium. Via this stone I want to give this beautiful mammal extra attention.”
This stone started travelling on 2019-06-10.
Besides the travelling stones, there are also “resting stones” with stories, placed on the trail. Together all these stones form the international art routes.
